7 Cures for the fear of evangelism

Jesus is passionate for reaching lost and dying people and he wants to make us passionate for reaching lost and dying people.

We can have fear of what ppl will think, hurting a relationship, not stating the gospel correctly, not being able to answer questions, not having answers… yet God has not given us a spirit of fear

1st cure: Love

1 John 4:18 — There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.

God’s love is expressed by the gospel.  We express the love of Christ by proclaiming His works.  When we share the Gospel we show our love both for our God and for our neighbor, as we are commanded by Jesus with the greatest commandment.

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

John 3:16 — For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

1 John 4:9 — In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.

Paul had fear but it did not paralyze him

1 Corinthians 2:3 Paul’s says “I was with you in weakness and in fear”

2 Corinthians 5:11 — Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are well known to God, and I also trust are well known in your consciences.

Knowing this stirred Paul’s heart.  Some believers are dead to the reality of what awaits sinners when they die.

The first cure is to understand that God expressed His love by sending His son to die on the cross.  Therefore we express our love to Him by making His name known above man.  And understanding the fate of those that die without Christ we “love our neighbors as ourselves” as commanded by Jesus to overcome our fear.

2nd cure:  Authority

Matthew 28:18 — And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.Go thereforeand make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Know that Jesus that has absolute authority in heaven and on Earth and that God is with you.  You have been given His authority to preach the Gospel on this Earth.  The only thing that hinders you is your own fear.

3rd cure: Sowing

Know that the Gospel is a simple, yet profound, message that cannot be believed without the work of the Holy Spirit.  The Gospel is also the same for everyone that is perishing, you don’t need to know a bunch of theology, apologetics, nor do you need to study about other religions, simply focus on learning the gospel.

1 Corinthians 1:17-19 — For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.  For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.  For it is written:

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”

This is what we mean by when we say that we sow the seed.  We sow the seed of the Word of God, casting seeds far and wide planting God’s word so that He can reap the harvest.

In order to overcome man’s “wisdom” we do not fight wisdom with wisdom.  We fight with the most powerful force in the universe which is Gods’ Word.  For God’s foolishness is greater than man’s wisdom.

Luke 16:19-31:  The Rich Man and Lazarus

“Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’  Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’

MaCarther’s study bible puts it this way:

This speaks powerfully of the singular sufficiency of Scripture to overcome unbelief.  The gospel itself is the power of God unto salvation.  Since unbelief is at heart a moral, rather than an intellectual, problem, no amount of evidences will ever turn unbelief to faith.  But the revealed Word of God has inherent power to do so.

Let’s  look at the armor of God in Ephesians 6, our offensive weapon is the Word of God.  It says nother here about our intellect or understanding of other religions.

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

Focus on preaching God’s Word and let God’s word do the work, for only God’s word has the power to save.  The simplicity of sowing the Word should be freeing and not burdensome.

4th cure: Prepare

2 Timothy 2:15 — Be diligent to present yourself approved to God.

Memorize these and other verses:  John 3:16-18, Romans 3:10, Romans 6:23, Romans 5:8, Romans 10:9-10, Acts 4:12, John 14:6, 1 John 1:9-10, Acts 17:30 (BTW you can memorized them by using them)

Prepare.   Know your message.  Read your Bible, look for the Gospel…it’s everywhere in scripture

5th cure: Remember

Deuteronomy 7:17-18 — “If you should say in your heart, ‘These nations are greater than I; how can I dispossess them?’— you shall not be afraid of them, but you shall remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt:

They forgot what God had done and it paralyzed them

2 Corinthians 13:5 — Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.

1 Timothy 2:8-9 — Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel, for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not chained.

Remember how God has powerfully worked in your life.  Remember the Gospel; preach the gospel to yourself… daily.  Preaching the Gospel to yourself will make it easier to preach it to others

6th cure: Prayer

The apostles prayed, “Grant to us with all boldness” and in Acts 29:31 God  responds, “God heard their prayer and He filled them with the Holy Spirit”

Matthew 9:38 “Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”

Ephesians 6: 18-20 “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

Pray for boldness, pray for courage, and pray that the Lord of harvest would send out laborers

7th cure: Faith

Luke 17:5-6 — And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.”  So the Lord said, “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

You already have faith, use the faith that you have.

Romans 10:17 — So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Build up your faith by reading the Bible and through biblical exhortations on evangelism: Apocity, Ray Comfort, Mark Cahill, Tony Miano teachings.

1 Corinthians 16:13 — Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong

Step out in faith, be like Jonathon when he went up with his armor bearer and see what the Lord would do.
