The first thing to understand, by the Word of God, all Christians are called to share their faith.  There is no “gift” of evangelism.  In fact it is like everything else it takes practice but to get practice you have to take those first steps… the baby steps.

The second thing to understand is that all Christians are called to read their Bibles, fellowship with believers, Worship God, Pray and as mentioned above share their faith.  Guess which one of these five we won’t be able to do in Heaven?  We won’t be able to share the Gospel with the lost, that is why doing it now is so important.

My start

I felt the Holy Spirit moving me to evangelize every time our pastor would go over scripture that called Christian’s to share their faith.  As it turns out there are a lot of those scriptures.  But as you’ll read later on the story of my brother the desire to share Christ’s love was there for a long time.  But I was so frightened and scared in so many ways.  I didn’t know what to say, I wasn’t sure that I could answer the tough questions and people are so closed to hearing the Gospel, right?  Then I found out that there is a spirit of fear that makes any natural fear or hesitation just that much worse.  Maybe you have the same feelings, you want to share the Gospel, you know that you must share the Gospel but you just don’t know where to start.  Well I pray that my experience and the experience of others will help.

Pray

Be obedient in prayer and pray as commanded:   in Luke 10:2 ‘Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.’

Other prayers are to pray for boldness as in Acts 4:29 and Ephesians 6:19.  Of course much prayer is good so praying for strength and God’s power and to pray for those that we are witnessing; pray for the deception to be lifted and pray to have love for humanity as Jesus loved the world.

The Word and the commands

There is nothing like the power of the Word to add power to your walk.  Understanding how evangelism was carried out in the New Testament and how it was commanded by Jesus in Mark16:15 leaves us without any excuses and that can be empowering as it breaks down all man-centered excuses for not proclaiming the Gospel.   We go with the power and authority of the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.  Here are some key verses where Jesus charges us to proclaim His word.

Mark 16:15 – And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.”

Acts 1:8 – But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”  — Know that witnesses speak forth the truth or they are held in contempt of court.

Luke 24:46-48 — Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things.

Romans 10:14-15 — How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?  And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written:  “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace,
Who bring glad tidings of good things!” — The Gospel must be spoken and heard to be believed.

Matthew 28:18-20 — And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

My brother Doug – Find your motivation

It is great to rely on the Word of God.  But God can also use our personal experiences to motivate us.  Everyone will have their own motivation but I will share one of mine so as to illustrate how you might find your own motivation.  I had recently gotten saved in Colorado and I went back home to family.  I was excited to share “Jesus” with my big brother.  I tried to tell him about what I knew and because I heard the Gospel in a great church I tried to tell him about that.  Unfortunately church was a bad word in our family.  Of course later when I learned about the Way of the Master I discovered that you don’t even need to mention church, but in the end I felt that I did not clearly convey the Gospel.  So one of my motivations was to be prepared the next time I saw my brother, the atheist.  That was one of the primary motivators to get me started.  Unfortunately I have never seen him since, for a variety of reasons, and I haven’t had the opportunity to share the Gospel with him.  Of course I know that our Lord can send someone other than me to share and I know that if the Lord wants that to happen it will happen, but as it happened the Lord used that incident in me to motivate me to learn to share.

I don’t know what to say

This thought or statement scares many would be evangelists. The Gospel is pretty simple, if it wasn’t so He would ask all of us to be His witnesses and so we can learn to share in only a short time.  It does take some effort but it is well worth the effort to impact someone’s eternity.  The key to understanding how to share the Gospel is knowing that you can bypass the intellect and the defense mechanisms by going straight to the conscience.  This is how God designed it and this is why He insists that we use His law as it was designed.  The best teaching on this Ray Comfort’s Hell’s Best Kept Secret.  So part of this process you undertake yourself.  Download and listen to HBKS.  You can find a link on the front page to this website.

You don’t have to start out alone

Finally, find a group or team that go out regularly.  There is power in God’s Word, in prayer and in the fellowship of believers.  There is fellowship in sharing the Gospel with believers and they will come along side you and show you how easy it is to approach people w/ the Gospel and encourage you and teach you.  Find a group and start sharing the Gospel now.  Oh, by the way, if you are really feeling lead to share with a friend, family or neighbor… then go out with the group and practice on strangers then you’ll be prepared the next time a chance to share comes up with your friend, family or neighbor.
